£116m Florian Wirtz Reveals Why He Joined Liverpool as Huge Ambitions Revealed

Germany International Joins Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in Potential Record-Breaking £116m Move

Liverpool have officially announced the high-profile signing of German star Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, marking a historic moment in the club’s transfer history.

The 22-year-old forward has made the switch to Anfield for an initial sum of £100 million, with the total fee potentially reaching £116.5 million depending on performance-related bonuses.

Should those add-ons be triggered, the final amount would surpass the existing British transfer record, which stands at £115 million — the amount Chelsea paid to acquire Moises Caicedo from Brighton back in 2022.

Wirtz has committed to a five-year contract with Liverpool, and reports suggest he will earn a weekly wage of approximately £195,000.

“I feel very happy and very proud,” Wirtz told Liverpool’s official website. “Finally it’s done and I was waiting for a long time – finally it’s done and I am really happy.

“I’m really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League.

“I will see how I can perform there. I hope I can do my best. I spoke also with some players who played there and they told me that it’s perfect for me and every pitch is perfect, you can enjoy every game. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”

He added: “I would like to win everything every year! First of all, we have to do our work, I have to make my work.”

“In the end, we want to be successful. Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I’m really ambitious.”

The acquisition of Florian Wirtz represents a bold statement from Liverpool and new head coach Arne Slot as they prepare to defend their Premier League crown. Wirtz has emerged as one of Europe’s most exciting young players, having played a central role in Bayer Leverkusen’s remarkable unbeaten domestic double during the 2023–24 campaign.

The German international registered an impressive 16 goals and 15 assists in 45 matches across all competitions last season. Despite his efforts, Leverkusen finished second in the Bundesliga, trailing champions Bayern Munich by a 13-point margin.

Wirtz began his professional journey with Bayer Leverkusen in 2020 after graduating from their youth system. Over the years, he amassed 197 appearances for the club and has also earned 31 caps for the German national team.

Securing Wirtz’s signature was no easy feat for Liverpool, who had to fend off serious interest from Bundesliga title holders Bayern Munich. After a prolonged pursuit, Liverpool ultimately outpriced their German rivals to land the attacking midfielder.

This high-profile signing is unlikely to be Liverpool’s only major move of the summer. Reports suggest the club is considering a record-breaking £150 million bid for Newcastle United’s prolific striker Alexander Isak, which could set a new benchmark for British transfers.

In addition, Liverpool remain engaged in discussions with Bayer Leverkusen, who have reportedly identified Liverpool centre-back Jarell Quansah as a potential signing.
