Fabrizio Romano provided an update on Hugo Ekitike on Monday evening that is bound to catch the attention of Liverpool fans.
Following Florian Plettenberg’s report on Sunday night via X, which stated that Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea are all competing for the Eintracht Frankfurt forward, Romano added that the 22-year-old is currently ‘considering all options’ and has not yet expressed a preference for any of the three clubs.
Liverpool Stay in Contact in Pursuit of Ekitike
In a recent update on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano reported that Darwin Nunez is ‘expected to leave’ Anfield this summer, despite Stan Collymore’s calls for him to stay. He also noted that FSG are already making moves to try and secure the signing of the French striker.
The journalist said: “With Darwin leaving, Ekitike is a concrete target for Liverpool. Liverpool already spoke to the agents of the player at the end of May. Liverpool are in regular contact with people close to Hugo Ekitike, so for sure Ekitike remains a player on Liverpool’s list.
“I know there are rumours on several clubs for this kind of striker, but don’t forget Liverpool, because they are still there.”
Ekitike Appears to Be a More Realistic Target Than Alexander Isak
With Plettenberg revealing that Manchester United have now made contact with Hugo Ekitike’s representatives and shown ‘concrete interest’ in the striker, it’s a positive sign that Liverpool’s hierarchy have already taken similar steps and remained persistent in their pursuit of the 22-year-old.
Should the Reds decide to part ways with Darwin Nunez this summer, it would make sense to secure a centre-forward replacement before the transfer window closes at the end of August. While Diogo Jota’s quality is unquestionable, his ongoing injury issues make him an unreliable option across a full season.
Though Lewis Steele has argued that the Eintracht Frankfurt forward doesn’t quite belong in the same top tier as Alexander Isak, Ekitike would likely come at a significantly lower price. That becomes particularly relevant in a window where Liverpool have already committed £116m to signing Florian Wirtz.
The continued communication with Ekitike’s camp suggests that FSG may be preparing for the departure of the current number 9 and want to be ready to move swiftly for the France under-21 international should a vacancy arise in the starting striker role.
Let’s hope Liverpool maintain their pursuit of the talented 22-year-old, especially with two of their fiercest rivals also pushing to land his signature.
